How Can I Be Happy Again?

Asking yourself the question "How can I be happy again?" is a common-enough query, especially after the occurrence of some event that's personally devastating. Such incidents usually revolve around loss, especially when it comes to loss of a loved one (a parent or spouse or a longtime boy- or girlfriend) or after the experience of some deep personal crisis.

The first step to take when it comes to realizing that you WILL be happy again is to understand that what you're feeling is perfectly normal, and that everybody without exception will experience these same feelings at one time or another in their own lives. You are not alone, and if you allow it, others who have gone through these same experiences will be there for you.

That last part in the paragraph above can be important to many - though not all - people. Studies show that those who experience issues that cause unhappiness do better at regaining happiness when they have the solicitude and support of others during a trying time. So, don't be afraid to seek out those who empathize and realize what you're going through. They're out there, if you have the courage to look.

Understand, also, that no matter what you do today you cannot travel back through time to undo what was done in the past. It's physically and psychologically impossible. In this regard, then, it's better that you look at what you're going to do with yourself from this moment going forward and to let go of those negative feelings and hurts that many people tend to nurture like flowers in a valued garden.

In the end, becoming happy with yourself means realizing you can't change the past, and that what's done is done. Seek the comfort and caring of others - perhaps in a support group - who have been through life-altering changes, also. Be happy with whom you are and if you're not, then take positive and healthy steps to becoming what you'd like, which is our right and our freedom to do so as sovereign human beings.
